White refers to all available wave lengths of the spectrum, much like white refers to the combination of all the major colors or color wave lengths. This noise can be compared to a drone sound. It is a noise that masks unwanted sounds and is gentle and peaceful to listen to.
What is white noise, for example? Take, for instance, if you are listening to a few sounds at the same time and you can still detect each individual sound. For some people, that might mean 1 or 2, and for others, it may be many more. Now, multiply the number of sounds you are listening to until you get to the point where you can no longer distinguish the individual sounds. At this point, you have created and experienced all the possible sounds that you can hear, and that is what white noise is about.
In nature, this noise is like a gentle wind blowing in the trees. I can still remember old days where we had this grove of evergreen trees behind our house. It was very soothing to sit outside and listen to the wind blow through the trees. The otherplace where you will find this noise naturally present, is during a rain. It is the soothing noise of nature. Of course, my most favorite is ocean waves on the beach that create one of the most dynamic sounds, in my opinion.

Now that we understand more about this wonderful noise, what is it used for in our modern world? One will be surprised to learn that emergency vehicles use it to cut background noise so that the siren goes farther. Audio engineers use noise to help test microphones andamplification systems, while architectural engineers use it to test the acoustics of buildings. More often, people living in cities use it to help block out traffic and other noises. Night shift workers frequently use this noise to help them sleep during the day, keeping out unwanted daytime noise distractions.
What is the use of white noise in health care?
Tinnitus is the biggest example of it is being used in the area of health. It helps cancel out the ringing in the ears of the patients, which helps them relax. For tinnitus sufferers, it can be stressful when quiet moments are irritating to them. This noise has been suggested as a way to help crying newborn babies, by helping soothe and relax them. It goes without saying that it is very useful for sleep disorders, stress reduction, relaxation, and a night of more restful and deep sleep.
What is white noise used for in Mind Body practices?
It is helpful in anything from creative endeavors of artists, writers, and musicians to enhancement of dream states and clarity of thoughts when making important decisions. Meditation, relaxation, and massage are enhanced by it, as it allows an individual to escape and get relief from the noises of the day.
